Hierbij stroomt de watergang door de kernen Valkenswaard en Eindhoven. Via het Kempisch Kanaal wordt de Dommel deels gevoed met Maaswater o.a. ten behoeve van vloeivelden en visvijvers. In België lozen meerdere rioolwaterzuiveringen het effluent op de Dommel. Sinds 1888 is in Overpelt een zinkfabriek aanwezig waarvan het effluent in de Dommel terecht komt. In Nederland zijn in het afwateringsgebied van de Boven Dommel 31 gemengde overstorten aanwezig. Verder liggen er drie watermolens in de Boven Dommel. De Boven Dommel is een Natura 2000 beek met als doel “beken en rivieren met waterplanten” en maakt onderdeel uit van het N2000 gebied Leenderbos, Groote Heide & De Plateaux. In gebieden met een landbouwfunctie betreft het bijvoorbeeld de teelt van gewassen die optimaal renderen bij een bepaalde grondwaterstand, maar ook aan de berijdbaarheid van percelen die nodig is voor een goede bedrijfsvoering. \r\nHet dempen van waterlopen of het verhogen van de drainagebasis heeft tot gevolg dat de optimale waterhuishoudkundige situatie wordt verstoord en opbrengstderving aan de orde is. Bovendien leiden de afgenomen mogelijkheden voor waterafvoer ertoe dat regenwater plaatselijk lang op het land blijft staan.\r\nEen natuurlijke fluctuatie van het peil heeft tot gevolg dat de optimale waterhuishoudkundige situatie wordt verstoort en opbrengstderving aan de orde is.\r\nDe ontstane opbrengstderving is meestal niet te mitigeren door bewezen aanpassingen in de goede landbouwpraktijk. Dit komt door een combinatie van factoren: de noodzakelijke grondbeschikbaarheid is afhankelijk van medewerking van grondeigenaren en dynamiek op de markt; planprocedures vragen meer tijd wanneer waterkwaliteitsmaatregelen in samenhang met andere wateropgaven (droogte, zoetwatervoorziening, wateroverlast) en andere maatschappelijke en ruimtelijke opgaven worden uitgevoerd (integrale gebiedsontwikkeling gericht op klimaatrobuuste watersystemen).\r\nVoor de belasting met stoffen zijn het onvoldoende politiek en maatschappelijk draagvlak voor het treffen van maatregelen en onvoldoende kennis over bronnen en maatregelen belangrijke redenen dat de normen niet voor eind 2021 kunnen worden gehaald.
